We’ve been taught to name our emotions as a way of managing them.

“Notice it. Label it. Say what you feel.”

It sounds wise.

But the truth is… it may actually be what’s keeping you stuck.

Here’s why:

Emotions don’t last forever

An emotion in the body only lasts around 90 seconds 2 minutes max.

That’s it.

So why does it feel like we’re drowning in them for hours — days or even years?

Because instead of letting them move through, we resist them. We judge them. We think about them obsessively. And that resistance keeps the emotions charge alive.

Labelling pulls you into your head

When you’re told to “label what you feel,” your brain switches tracks.

You leave the part of the brain that feels, and jump straight into the part that thinks.

That’s why you can end up saying:

“I feel anxious. I feel sad. I feel overwhelmed.”

And yet — nothing actually changes in your body.

Because emotions aren’t concepts to be described. They’re sensations to be felt.

You can’t think your way through a feeling

Here’s the key:

Feelings don’t resolve in the mind. They resolve in the body.

Your nervous system doesn’t want a label.

She wants space. Sensation. Breath.

She wants you to notice the tight chest, the heavy shoulders, the flutter in your stomach — without rushing to translate them all into words.

What actually works

Instead of labelling your emotions, try pausing to feel:

Notice the sensation in your body.

Allow it to be there without naming or fixing.

Breathe into it.

Wait for it to shift. (It always does — because your body is built to move emotions through, not hold them forever.)

The quiet truth

You don’t need a new label for what you feel.
You need a new relationship with what your body is already saying.

That’s when 90 seconds of emotion can finally pass — and your system remembers what it feels like to settle again.
